In early 2020 I began posting on Twitter as a way to bring information about the Region to the people of Northwest Indiana. While my focus was primarily on Covid-19 data, I also posted economic data and analysis for Northwest Indiana.
With the implosion of Twitter, I have been trying to find new ways to reach the residents of Northwest Indiana. I’ve had some success with Mastodon (you can follow me @pollak@mstdn.social), where roughly half of respondents in a poll of my followers say they either live or are interested in Northwest Indiana. However, I’m also aware that Mastodon can be overwhelming for some. I’m also interested in a platform which allows somewhat longer form posts as well as making it easier to return to and reference previously posted material. So, here I am on Substack under the heading of “The Region Economist” (Yes, I realize this is a title suspiciously close to Michael J. Hicks’ “The Country Economist” but I promise I came up with it independently, plus I respect Dr. Hicks and it’s an association wouldn’t be unhappy to have).
“The Region Economist” is a blog/newsletter platform on which I can present economic data and analysis relevant to Northwest Indiana as well as the broader state of Indiana. Unlike with micro-blogging platforms like Twitter and Mastodon (and to some extent Facebook) it will be an opportunity to expand on topics in greater depth while hopefully continuing to allow me to interact from readers. While it will mostly focus on economic topics, I can guarantee we will take detours into demographic, socioeconomic, education and political areas, as well as (of course) continue including some of the topics that were the most fun during the Twitter era, like chili making, apples, snacks, gardening, and more! I also hope this will be an opportunity to hear from you about topics and issues you are interested in and would like me to discuss and dive into more deeply.
I hope you consider subscribing and joining me! Thank you! -Micah
